The World Health Organization defines Disability as follows: "Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. Thus disability is a complex phenomenon, reflecting an interaction between features of a person’s body and features of the society in which he or she lives."

An individual may also qualify as disabled if he/she has had an impairment in the past or is seen as disabled based on a personal or group standard or norm. Such impairments may include physical, sensory, and cognitive or developmental disabilities. Mental disorders (also known as psychiatric or psychosocial disability) and various types of chronic disease may also be considered qualifying disabilities.

A disability may occur during a person's lifetime or may be present from birth. A physical impairment is any disability which limits the physical function of limbs or fine or gross motor ability.

Can a disabled member of the Royal Family be heir to the throne?
Q. I just wondered this because we have laws that promote anti-discrimination, and anti-oppression, and also promote the rights of people with learning difficulties, or physically disabled. I just wondered if this would allow the UK to be ruled by a King or Queen with such difficulties - especially since they religiously intolerant. They don't allow Catholics to be in the Royal Family (because Catholics answer to the Pope, not the Queen) So I just wondered if they would actually allow someone with life difficulties rule the country, or would it pass to the next "perfect" heir?

A. Difficult to say, depending on how severe their difficulties were. A physical disability would not be as major as a learning difficulty. If they had severe learning disabilities, they would possibly reign as a figurehead with a regent.

How are magnetized security features on items in stores disabled by just scanning the barcodes?
Q. From what I understand there are these thin metal strips on goods in stores for security in catching shop-lifters.' If this is how items with such security features are detected by the high frequency detector gates located by the doors of stores, then how are these magnetized items disabled simply by scanning their barcodes when purchased?

A. Each thin metal strip contain a data (mostly a sort of serial number, stored as induced magnetic pattern). And when it is scanned, the data from the metal strip will be retrieved, then the cashier computer will connect to its network, and modify its items database, allowing the corresponding item to be registered/marked as paid/purchased. When someone walk through a detector gate, the high frequency wave produced by the gate will be reflected by the magnet according to the data it contains (the reflected wave will have sort of pattern). The serial number of the item will then be identified by the detector gate. Then, a computer in the detector gate will access the store's database to see whether the item with that serial number has been… [cont.]
