A. Full Colourblindness will likely be a bar from getting an ATPL in Canada. However, there are degrees of colour deficiency which may be acceptable for getting the full ATPL and night rating. If not, being colour blind may still allow you to get a commercial licence restricted to flying day only - See section 1.41 at the bottom of this page There may be different tests to demonstrate that a colour deficiency will not pose a threat to aviation safety. You'll have to discuss this with an aviation medical examiner as to what tests are available. The standard test that I did for my Cat 1 medical was the Ishihara test . But, there may be options to take a Farnsworth test You used to be able to take a light gun test, but it would seem… [cont.]

What are any and all causes for canine blindness?
Q. Roamy was diagnosed with acute blindness in Oct 06. Teams of Ophthalmologists, Neurologists, and Internalists have examined her. Extensive blood work, an MRI, and CSF Analysis have been performed. The MRI revealed lesions (or possibly fluid-filled cysts) in her brain. The Specialists have assured me the lesions have nothing to do with her blindness. I am making a list of every reason for canine blindness so I can compare it against tests already conducted. She is 8 years old - spayed female - mixed breed - 118 lbs (most of which has been gained in the last 3 months while on Prednisone). Her condition first presented in Sep 06 as clear nasal/eye discharge and shuddering through the shoulders with lethargy. She started having Grand Mal… [cont.]

A. Causes of blindness & vision loss there are numerous causes of ocular problems and blindness in dogs. Some of the causes are congenital while others are non hereditary in nature. Some of the more common and serious canine eye disorders are: Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a disease which results in an increase in the fluid pressure within the eye. It is painful and can result in permanent blindness. This disease can be genetically inherited (primary glaucoma) or it can be the result of injury, of functional diseases, of cancer or of infections of a bacterial, viral or even fungal nature (secondary glaucoma.) How can corneal Abrasions lead to blindness?
Q. How severe must a case of corneal abrasions be, when left untreated, for it to lead to blindness? Which are some situations in which a case this severe is most likely? I have heard that infection following corneal abrasions may lead to blindness, is this true?
Asked by c.lvandenboogard - Tue Aug 26 21:20:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most corneal abrasions heal very rapidly, but there are some times when this normal healing could be complicated by infection - The example that springs to mind would be ulcerative keratitis, which can lead to blindness. It's caused by a normally harmless bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa, but if it gets into the cornea and is allowed to sit there (think, putting a contact lens over it), then it can lead to a very rapid (24-48 hours) infection and then blindness. That's why individuals with corneal abrasions are prohibited from wearing contacts. That would be the only immediate cause - as they do heal quite quickly. Hope this helps!

How do I know if I have night blindness?
Q. I don't think I have night blindness, but I know I have a hard time driving in the dark. Even if I try to look away from other cars' headlights, they prevent me from seeing the road. I felt like I couldn't see anything today and I had to try really hard to stay in my lane. I don't have that much driving experience, especially in the dark, but I wonder if it's normal that I have this hard of a time seeing. What could be wrong?

Can men pass the the color blindness trait to their children?
Q. My friend and I have an argument on our hands and none of our old college text books. We are trying to figure out if a man can pass the color blindness trait onto their children, or if only women are carriers of the trait. Please let me know and perhaps provide where you got your information. Thanks in advance!
Asked by Miss Madison - Sat Dec 27 18:14:04 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. LOL. Semantics, semantics. The man can pass his bad allele on to his girl children. Whether or not the girl actually has the trait depends on mom: If mom is normal, girl will be a carrier. If mom is carrier, girl may be carrier or girl may have trait (50-50). If mom is colorblind, girl will be colorblind. The man cannot pass his bad allele on to his boy children.

Q. I don't know much about them, but is "night blindness" a possible symptom? I know they impact vision but I'm interested in just that symptom.
Asked by Bushed from Bush. - Wed Jan 28 19:56:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Loss of peripheral vision is a sign of pituitary tumor. That is from pressure on the optic nerve. When you have a pituitary tumor, you are checked by optic field tests so as to see how the optic nerve is or is not effected.

What would the independent, dependent, and control be for the study of inattentional blindness and alcohol be?
Q. In a study involving inattentional blindness, they chose subjects who were given alcohol and those who were not. They were told to watch a video of people in white shirts passing a ball and asked after the video whether they had seen the gorilla. I think the independent variable would be those who received alcohol. I think the dependent variable would be inattentional blindness but maybe there is more to elaborate on this. I think the control group are those who received the placebo. Any guidance on this is appreciated. Thank you

A. colour blindness such as red or green blindness is a sex linked condition so mainly males have it as it is carried on one of the x chromosomes. (Very rare do women suffer the condition). I believe the gene fragments encoding red visual pigment and green visual pigment are different (and on different genes), and there are more repeats of the gene for green visual pigment than red in the genome. Try: and :)

Blindness after anesthesia in 6 month old kitten?
Q. I took the cat to be neutered, and he had a reaction to the anesthesia. He has some blindness (it is still early to know the extent) but has been very active, but still bumping into things, and has been able to find the litter box. The vet says his eyes are fine, which is good--so hopefully the brain will process images again. Could be soon, could be a few weeks. Anyone else have this problem? How long did it take for sight to come back (gradual sight, or immediate upon return)? Also, any alternative medicines known that could help his vision to return? Thank you!
Asked by Ann - Tue Jun 17 16:38:39 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. My cat Moby died under anesthesia, was resuccitated, was anesthetized again, was neutered, and then was left in a cage (still at the vet!) for hours having seizures. I rushed him to an emergency clinic in another state where they administered manitol for brain swelling. He had lost all vision with not much hope of recovering. He did however seem to find the litterbox and he did regain some sight over the following weeks. But he never regain full sight. I'm sorry I don't know of anything that may help him "relearn" to process images.

A. Gadiodian Shift has given you the real scoop, except for the hiring process, if you have a valid first class airman's medical certificate, thats all the company will want to know. As he said there are different test, but the easiest to PASS, is the "SODA" (Statement of demonstrated ability), it is a light gun test where a controller in the tower, flashes different color lights at you and you have to id them to a FAA Inspector, you pass, you get the letter, and night flying privileges and landing into a controlled field are restored. THis test is easy to pass even if you only see in black and white. Have your flight instructor make an appointment with the tower guys to "practice" the gun test. When they flash a green light he will tell you… [cont.]
