NounBraille or (especially US) braille
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Braille system is a method that is widely used by blind people to read and write. Braille was devised in 1821 by Louis Braille, a Frenchman. Each Braille character or cell is made up of six dot positions, arranged in a rectangle containing two columns of three dots each. A dot may be raised at any of the six positions to form sixty-four (2) permutations, including the arrangement in which no dots are raised. For reference purposes, a particular permutation may be described by naming the positions where dots are raised, the positions being universally numbered 1 to 3, from top to bottom, on the left, and 4 to 6, from top to bottom, on the right. For example, dots 1-3-4 would describe a cell with three dots raised, at the top and bottom in the left column and on top of the right column, i.e., the letter m. The lines of horizontal Braille text are separated by a space, much like visible printed text, so that the dots of one line can be differentiated from the Braille text above and below. Punctuation is represented by its own unique set of characters. The Braille system was based on a method of communication originally developed by Charles Barbier in response to Napoleon's demand for a code that soldiers could use to communicate silently and without light at night called night writing. Barbier's system was too complex for soldiers to learn, and was rejected by the military. In 1821 he visited the National Institute for the Blind in Paris, France, where he met Louis Braille. Braille identified the major failing of the code, which was that the human finger could not encompass the whole symbol without moving, and so could not move rapidly from one symbol to another. His modification was to use a 6 dot cell — the Braille system — which revolutionized written communication for the blind. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I engrave braille with a laser engraver? Q. I have a Zing 25 Watt laser for engraving signs and the signs I create must have braille on them to comply with ADA laws. I have a program called Corel Draw and it's quite tedious to make braille the way I've been doing it. Is there a built-in feature to do braille, or can someone give me a better way to engrave it? Thanks! I'll appreciate any help I can get. Asked by monotonouspilot - Tue Mar 31 21:01:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments What is the fastest ways to learn braille? Q. I guess im going bilnd, my eye doctor not only said I cant get lasik now, but my vision is getting worse every year, now im at a -8.50 in both eyes. Are there any programs that will help me learn braille for free? Asked by Jared (guitar is my life) - Sat Jan 17 00:33:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Unless you have a disased eye, there is no reason to go blind just from having a high prescription. I have patients wearing - 18.00 and - 20.00 , and they aren't blind. If you still have good vision with your glasses or contacts, there is no reason to believe you are going blind. But with high myopia like you have, you should be checked often for signs of retinal problems. You most likely see your eye Dr. every year or two, and that is something he surely checks for. I don't know where you can get courses in braille, but you have lots of time to check it out...learning something new is always good, even when it will probably never be needed.
