Concealment (also called abscondence or hiding) is obscuring something from view or rendering it inconspicuous, the opposite of exposure. A military term is CCD: camouflage (object looks like its surroundings), concealment (object cannot be seen), and deception (object looks like something else); in a broad sense, all three are forms of concealment.

In nature

Many organisms have evolved various forms of concealment. See the articles to hide, camouflage and mimicry.

Military tactics

  • In the genre of military tactics, the term refers to any object, vegetation, terrain feature, or phenomenon (i.e., night, smoke, fog) that prevents a combatant (or unit of combatants) from being seen by the enemy. In differentiation from the similar concept of cover, concealment cannot protect against actual projectiles.
A U.S. Soldier from the Nemesis troop, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment conceals himself through a smoke screen after one of his Regiments vehicles gets hit with an improvised explosive device, October 18, 2007, Baghdad, Iraq.

Computer science and programming

  • Information hiding is the hiding of design decisions in a computer program that are most likely to change.
  • Hidden surface determination is the process used to determine which surfaces and parts of surfaces are not visible from a certain viewpoint.

How big of a problem is an exposed hammer on a small revolver for conceal carry?
Q. I want to buy a small, .38 special revolver to use for conceal carry. I prefer to shoot revolvers single action rather than double action. However, am I taking a risk by buying a double action revolver with an exposed hammer rather than a concealed hammer? I have tried the shrouded hammer revolvers and don't like them. I like shooting single action much better but I am worried the hammer could accidentally snag on something and cock while in my pocket. Should I play it safe and buy the hammerless revolver? Or will I be ok buying the exposed hammer version? I don't like the hammerless version (concealed hammer) as much because you have to shoot it double action. I don't want the gun going off in my pocket though cause the hammer… [cont.]

A. I have a 357 revolver that I carry in my purse. I've had no problem with the hammer moving. It is pretty hard to pull back so I really don't worry about it.

How long will my peeled sunburn spots take to go away? Can i conceal them?
Q. About 5 days ago I was out in the sun all day. Four days ago some of the sunburn peeled off on my face and left huge blotches of lighter skin on my face. How long will it take for them to disappear? Can I conceal the spots somehow? I go back to school on Tuesday. Will the spots be gone by then? Thanks.
