New Jersey ( / n juː ˈ dʒ ɜr z i /, local pronunciation: / n uː ˈ dʒ ɜr z i /) is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered on the northeast by New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania and on the southwest by Delaware. New Jersey lies largely within the sprawling metropolitan areas of New York City and Philadelphia. It is the most densely populated state in the United States. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 1600s, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements. The English later seized control of the region, naming it the Province of New Jersey. It was granted as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. At this time, it was named after the largest of the British Channel Islands, Jersey, where Carteret had been born. New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War. In the 19th century, factories in cities such as Paterson and Trenton helped to drive the Industrial Revolution. New Jersey's position at the center of the Northeast megalopolis, between Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., fueled its rapid growth through the suburban boom of the 1950s and beyond. Today, New Jersey has the highest population density and the second highest median income of any state in the United States. Only Maryland has a higher median income. The Governor of New Jersey is Republican Chris Christie. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License I live in New Jersey but work in New York, how am I taxed? Q. I am married filing jointly, and when I go through my NY non-resident tax return, it taxes me on all the income my wife and I both made last year. She works in New Jersey, and I only worked in NY for half the year. Shouldn't I be taxed on just the money I made in NY? Asked by jonathanzila - Sun Feb 4 16:39:02 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you worked in NY, you have to pay NY taxes - its a privilege of working in NY. You must file a NY non-resident tax return. You must file as married filing jointly and include your wife's name and SSN but can omit her income on the NY tax return. There is another form you fill out w2here you basically verify that your wife had no NY income. You must also pay NJ taxes because you lived in NJ. On the NJ joint tax return, you will get a credit for your NJ state taxes for the taxes you paid in NY. If you only worked in NY for half the year, you only include that amount on the NY tax return. Answered by duoak - Sun Feb 4 17:05:17 2007 New Jersey: what happens if it snows the day of my driving test? Q. I am in New Jersey. They are predicting a lot of snow on the day that I'm supposed to take my test for my liscence. If there's a lot, will it be postponed? Or will they just make me take it anyway? And how do I call to reschedule if I can't get there? Asked by Trip - Thu Feb 8 19:53:03 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. First of all, You are not under any obligation to take your road test on the date the DMV gave you, good weather or bad. If you want to change your test date in advance of the test you may either call the NJ DMV, or change it online at Also, if The DMV offices in Trenton declare a snow day in the morning, all testing facilities in NJ are likely closed. If you call 1888 486-3339 (NJ DMV) (MON. - FRI 8:30 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.)., they can tell you if all tests are cancelled, and the will reschedule you. They MIGHT also have it posted on the DMV site under closings and delays at the link provided above. Unfortunately, on the actual day of your road test you can not reschedule online (by the nj dmv website), as the online service does not allow… [cont.] Answered by steelyourself - Sat Feb 10 20:24:42 2007 What's the difference between New York City and New Jersey?
Q. I mean as far as the people, culture, etc. Since New York City borders New Jersey like Newark, Jersey City, etc and I've never been there, I always get the people confused, especially when I meet someone from there. Is there a way you can tell the difference between the two people? lol idk just wondering? Asked by Dante S - Thu Jul 30 12:32:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can tell people from New Jersey by the big NJ stamped on the back of their necks! Seriously, though, WHY do you want to be able to instantly tell if someone is, or isn't, from New Jersey? I mean, when you determine that, are you going to treat them differently? If they're from New Jersey, say, are you planning to point and laugh at them? What you should REALLY be worried about is the fact that YOU, as a non-NYer of any kind, are the one who's going to be looked down on and ridiculed here, so don't worry about NJ vs. NY, worry about not looking like a big ol' redneck tourist yourself, OK? Good luck, and the link below is to a webpage titled "How Not To Look Like A Douchebag Tourist In New York City"...
